こんにちは (Kon-nee-chee-wa) is how you say hello in Japanese!
Now you may be thinking, “What in the world are those crazy lines?” Those crazy lines are called Hiragana (ひらがな). This is one of the three different Japanese alphabets. The other two are called Katakana (カタカナ) and Kanji (漢字). There are 92 total hiragana and katakana symbols. There are also over 2,000 Kanji in everyday use in Japan.
Hiragana and Kanji are used for native Japanese words such as 寿司 (sushi) or からて (karate).
Katakana are used for foreign words such as ベッド (bed), コンピューター (computer), and マクドナルド(McDonald's).
